Comments From Audiences

Although the story itself is not upbeat and positive, there is much to learn from it. I suppose this is why I liked it. I like movies that engage you and that are suspenseful, and this one was both. I do agree that we could have done without the sex and the bad language, but that's Hollywood. And actually it wasn't as bad as other movies. It's not an entertainment movie, but rather a movie that forces you to realize that communication, honesty and integrity are vital in our lives. Without them we destroy ourselves and those we love.

Maria, age 36

This film is not anti-America or anti-West, it is anti-GREED! In the film, the characters acknowledge that there are too many needy people out there, and that we can't help all of them, but we'd best be vigilant, otherwise we might miss that rare opportunity when we actually CAN help somebody. I can't imagine that any true follower of Christ would disagree with that sentiment.

Tyler Smith, age 24

This movie is absolutely amazing! Reason being, no matter how much the Left wants to accept it as a Liberal film and some of the Right want to reject it as liberal nonsense, the reality is that this movie is neither. This movie is simply an exercise in trying to open people's eyes. It does show drug companies as being somewhat greedy and allowing unstable drugs to be tested on the people of Africa who seem "disposable". But, the truth is the truth and sometimes it forces all of us to see what we don't want to.

Andrew, age 17

Dialogues

Part One

Justin: Diplomacy, therefore, as we've demonstrated, is the very map and marker of civilization pointing nations the safest way through country fraught with peril. And that's it. Er, Sir Bernard Pellegrin has asked me to convey his, er, regrets that he's been unable to deliver his lecture in person. And I thank you on my own behalf for your very kind attention. Thank you.

Tessa: Excuse me. Excuse me.

Justin: Yes?

Tessa: Excuse me. Sir, I've just got one question. I just wondered whose map, um, is Britain using when it completely ignores the United Nations and decides to invade Iraq. Or do you... do you think it's more diplomatic to bend to the will of a superpower and... and politely take part in Vietnam, the sequel?

Justin: Well, er, I... I can't speak for Sir Bernard.

Tessa: Oh, I thought that's why you were here.

Justin: I mean, diplomats have to go where they're sent.

Tessa: So do Labradors.

Justin: Ouch. Well, I think that, no, Sir Bernard would no doubt argue that when, um, peaceful means are exhausted, then...

Tessa: Exhausted? Mr. Quayle, they're not exactly exhausted, are they? I mean they're just... they're just... no, they're just lying in the way of the tanks. L-l-l-let's face it. We've taken 60 years to build up this international organization called the United Nations which is meant to avoid wars and now we just blow it up because our car's running out of petrol.

Man: Sit down, Tessa, for Christ's sake.

Justin: I-I-I think...

Tessa: Hold on a minute. Let's see what he says.

Justin: I think the questioner is making a valid point and that a nation's foreign policy should not be determined by narrow commercial interests.

Tessa: That's bull***. That's bull***. You have to take responsibility. You're being paid to apologise for this pathetic country of Britain, and he can explain to us why we've burned our diplomatic credentials and why we're killing, you know, thousands of innocent people just for...just for some barrels of oil and a... and a photo opportunity on the White House lawn. Why?

(Everybody leaves except Justin and Tessa, then Tessa sniffles)

Justin: Are you alright?

Tessa: Yes, thanks.

Justin: You were courageous.

Tessa: No, no, I was completely rude. It was just bad behaviour and I...

Justin: You were impassioned.

Tessa: I'm so embarrassed. Sorry.

Justin: Please don't be embarrassed.

Tessa: I'm really sorry. And er, thanks very much. You...tried to protect me.

Justin: Very feebly.

Tessa: No, you were... you were...you weren't feeble. I just...

Justin: Anyway, it was a very dull lecture.

Tessa: It was a dull lecture, but even so I shouldn't have...

Justin: Well, look, can I... can I buy you a coffee or...

Tessa: I owe you a drink.

Justin: Alright, you can buy me a drink. I'm Justin, by the way.

Tessa: Tessa. How do you do?

Justin: Pleased to meet you.

Tessa: Yeah, yeah, pleased to meet you.

Part One

Porter: Ah, Tessa.

Tessa: Hello, Porter.

Porter: May I introduce Tessa Quayle, Dr. Nbaga, the wife of our representative for aid effectiveness?

Tessa: Pleasure to meet you.

Nbaga: How do you do?

Porter: And this is Dr. Blum from Medecins Dans 1'Univers.

Blum: Good evening.

Nbaga: Dr. Blum and I have met.

Tessa: Yes, it was at the opening for the clinic that didn't have the sterilizing equipment. We've never met, Dr. Ngaba, but I know your work.

Bernard: Do you know Sir Kenneth Curtiss, chief executive of Three Bees.

Tessa: Yes, also by reputation. Good evening.

Curtiss: Good evening.

Bernard: It's a most successful company here in Kenya. We're very proud of him.

Tessa: And which of the bees are you?

Bernard: You were going to show us the garden room, I think, Porter.

Tessa: There is just one thing that I'd like to thank Dr. Ngaba for - the free Nevaripine. He's, er, persuaded the manufacturers to donate it to H.I.V positive mothers. It's a wonderful thing.

Porter: Shall we?

Tessa: The problem is, it isn't actually reaching them.

Blum: Some but not all.

Tessa: So we've been wondering, is that a standard cock-up, Dr. Ngaba, or... or were the pills converted into the limo that you arrived in?

Bernard: I think it's probably enough. If you'll come through here, Doctor?

Sandy: Justin.

Justin: Excuse me.

Sandy: You've got to do something about Tessa.

Justin: Well, what would you like me to do, Sandy?

Sandy: Well, she's embarrassing our guests. Her and that bloody Blum. There'll be hell to pay, I can tell you.

Justin: The squall seems to have passed.

Sandy: If you can't control her, you should keep her locked up.

Part One

(Sandy is on the phone)

Sandy: Kenny, I can't discuss this on the phone.

Kenneth: That cow of yours wouldn't even give me an appointment. Time was, you buggers couldn't get your tongues far enough up my arse. What's changed?

(Tessa comes in)

Tessa: Hi.

Kenneth: If I find out that this has got anything to do with that ***...

Sandy: Come to my office. I... I've got to go, Kenny. Bye.

Tessa: Having trouble with Three Bees, Sandy?

Sandy: Kenny being Kenny.

Tessa: Oh, nothing to do with my report then?

Sandy: Oh, he's just ranting.

Tessa: Sandy, you promised me you were gonna do something.

Sandy: I sent your report to London.

Tessa: Really?

Sandy: Yeah.

Tessa: To Pellegrin?

Sandy: Yeah.

Tessa: And?

Sandy: There was no official response.

Tessa: Well, what was there then?

Sandy: Well, just a personal letter. That's all.

Tessa: Saying?

Sandy: It's private.

Tessa: What do you mean it's private? That's most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. I sent him an official document. I have gonna to call Pellegrin and ask him.

Sandy: No, no. Don't do that, Tessa.

Tessa: Why?

Sandy: It's serious.

Tessa: You know me well enough to know that I'm not gonna take no for an answer. Come on.

Sandy: Tessa, I'm supposed to keep an eye on you.

Tessa: What?

Sandy: Report where you are. What you are doing. Trust me, Tessa. This is something that you should not pursue. I say that as a friend who cares deeply for you.

(Sandy's wife Gloria comes in)

Gloria: Sandy? Oh, Tessa.

Tessa: Hi, Gloria.

Gloria: Been wondering where you'd got to. Darling, you know we really have to leave now. Match starts in half an hour. Harry's got a cricket match. You're still coming, right?

Sandy: Yes, of course.

Gloria: You're not too busy, no?

Sandy: One sec.

Gloria: Right, OK. Justin's waiting for you in the car.

Tessa: Alright, tell him I'll be right down.

(Gloria is out and Tessa locks the door)

Tessa: Sandy, what do you think of me?

Sandy: I think you're beautiful.

Tessa: Do you?

Sandy: Yes.

Tessa: Really?

Sandy: Yes.

Tessa: Well, you can have me if you show me the letter.

Sandy: Are you serious?

Tessa: Yeah.

Sandy: When?

Tessa: Um, when I get back from Loki.

Sandy: Tessa, if anyone ever found out I'd shown you the letter, I'd be ruined.

Tessa: No one's gonna know, Sandy.

(Sandy opens his drawer and takes out the letter)

Sandy: Put it back in the drawer. Lock the drawer. Put the key back. Read it at once. Promise.

Tessa: Promise.

Part One

(Justin with Tessa's friend Ghita in a coffee shop)

Justin: Ghita, hi. Thanks for coming.

Ghita: So why did you want to meet here? Something that we shouldn't be seen talking about?

Justin: Dypraxa. I know that Tessa and Arnold wrote a report on the Three Bees trials and I need to know what happened to it.

Ghita: What makes you think I know?

Justin: Because they trusted you, so do I. Help me, please, Ghita.

Ghita: All I know is that Tessa gave Sandy a copy.

Justin: Sandy? Why him?

Ghita: Sandy was a compromise. Semi-official. Arnold wanted to go public with it. Tessa wouldn't.

Justin: Because?

Ghita: Because she wanted to do it your way, through channels. But Justin, I wouldn't bother looking for it. If it threatens Britain commercial interests, it would've been shredded.

Justin: She could've brought it to me.

Ghita: She didn't want to get you involved.

Justin: Why? Ghita, why didn't she want me involved?

Ghita: To protect you.

Justin: Do you know if she showed the report to anyone else?

Ghita: Kenny Curtiss.

Part Two

(Justin with Sandy in a garden)

Sandy: Christ, how did you get here?

Justin: Safari tour, via Paris.

Sandy: Hunting me now, Justin? You're the one on the run.

(Justin shows Sandy a love letter that Sandy wrote to Tessa)

Sandy: I loved her. I'm not ashamed of it.

Justin: Nor should you be, if it were true.

Sandy: It's not for you to tell me how I felt. If you've read that, you'll see that I let her read something that she shouldn't.

Justin: Yeah, a letter from Pellegrin. She trusted you.

Sandy: What do you want for that?

Justin: I want to know why Pellegrin suppressed Tessa's report. It was him, wasn't it?

Sandy: Don't try and play detective.

Justin: Three Bees, KDH, Dypraxa. What's the story on that axis of evil? KDH is Swiss-Canadian. So why are we involved?

Sandy: Curtiss is one of us. He's British. Christ, Justin, stop bleeding for bloody Africa and show some loyalty. That plant KDH built in Wales could have gone to France. Fifteen hundred jobs in a depressed region. We owed them. They needed help with the Dypraxa trials. KDH needed an investment partner here. Curtiss and Three Bees served us both.

Justin: And Tessa wanted what?

Sandy: Pressure on Kenny, to stop the tests, redesign the bloody drug. Three years' delay, millions of dollars.

Justin: Or?

Sandy: We're not paid to be bleeding hearts. You know that, Justin. We're not killing people who wouldn't be dead otherwise. Look at the death rate. Not that anybody's counting.

Justin: But you were a bleeding heart, Sandy. Tessa was your salvation, wasn't she, from all of this? You loved her, remember?

Sandy: Pellegrin said the report was too damaging, she had to be stopped.

Justin: Oh, yes, she was stopped.

Sandy: I betrayed her. We all did. You did it by growing flowers.

Justin: How did you betray her, Sandy?

Sandy: They wanted to know what she was up to. I'm the one who told them she was going to Loki.

Justin: Who did you tell?

Sandy: Pellegrin. But God knows who he told.

Part Two

Lorbeer: This is what you came for, I believe.

(Lorbeer gives Justin a letter)

Lobeer: Your wife would have made that tape public, Mr. Quayle, with my voice on it. That letter was my insurance policy.

Justin: But how did they know where to find her?

Lorbeer: They were on their way to Marsabit, taking the whole rotten package to Grace Makanga. Makanga would have put it in front of the U.N.

Justin: But someone knew exactly where Tessa and Arnold would be.

Lorbeer: That was me. I radioed Nairobi. KDH security man, name of Crick. God, Christ, man. I didn't know they were gonna be murdered. My oath to God. Crick's going to know that you were up here. Going to be very interested to know where you're headed. What do I tell him?

Justin: He'll know. He's been there before.

(Justin goes to a pilot named Andika)

Justin: Mr. Andika.

Andika: Yeah?

Justin: I'd like to apologize if I embarrassed you earlier.

Andika: It's all right.

Justin: Do you think that it would be possible to land the plane here?

Andika: Lake Turkana? It's possible, but you don't wanna go there. It's nothing there but crocodiles. Let me take you back to Loki.

Justin: Well I... I wouldn't be alone for long. Please, I'd be, um...I'd be grateful. I have one more favour to ask you, I'm sorry. Do you think you could post that envelope for me? It's quite urgent.

Andika: Ah, Rome.

Part two

Ham: I have, er, chosen a text... I know Justin and Tessa would approve. It's an epistle. Non-canonical.

(Ham is reading the letter.)

Ham: My dear Sandy: Your naivety is beyond belief. Knowing our arrangements with KDH and Three Bees, you send me this half-baked report by some bleeding heart diplomatic wife and her black lover and ask me to take action. The only action required, apart from shredding the thing, is to keep a tighter rein on your resident harlot. I want to know what she does, where she goes, whom she meets. The issue here is deniability. If nobody told us Dypraxa was causing deaths we can't be held responsible. But my dear Sandy, should it ever become known that we've closed our eyes to the deaths, none of us would survive the scandal.

(Bernard is leaving the hall while many journalists take photos of him)

Ham: I still have great hopes of you. My love to Gloria. Yours sincerely, Bernard.

Journalist: This way, Sir. What do you have to say, Sir?

Ham: It was a bizarre sort of suicide. His body bore no fewer than eight bullet wounds from three different guns, none of which was the one found in his hand. So who has got away with murder? Not, of course, the British government. They merely covered up, as one does, the offensive corpses. Though not literally. That was done by person or persons unknown. So who has committed murder? Not, of course, the highly respectable firm of KHD Pharmaceutical which has enjoyed record profits this quarter and has now licensed ZimbaMed of Harare to continue testing Dypraxa in Africa. No, there are no murders in Africa, only regrettable deaths. And from those deaths we derive the benefits of civilization - benefits we can afford so easily, because those lives were bought so cheaply.

Three Big Talking Points

1. Creative Team

2. Real-life Events

3. Locations

African-set Films

(Running Wild)

(Sahara)

(Out of Africa)

(Nowhere in Africa)

(Hotel Rwanda)

(The Ghost and The Darkness)

6. on the run “逃跑、被通缉”的意思。

8. bleeding heart
