Feel the pulse of the city by visiting its tourist hubs. Set off to see the Capitol Complex in Sector 1 and the city emblem Open Hand, all considered architectural gems of Le Corbusier, the Frenchman man who planned the city. Reserve the evening for Rock Garden, the globally-recognised quirky marvel. It would be enriching to meet its self-effacing creator Nek Chand who can almost-always be found at his office on the premises. A sunset view of the lovely Sukhna Lake, a stone’s throw away, will be a scenic cap to the day out. Treat yourself to dinner at the uber chic Saffron, the fine dining restaurant at JW Marriott. A part of its menu offers delectable fare from the interiors of Punjab.
Begin the day with a brisk walk at the lovely Rose Garden, that’s a floral feast for the eyes during its peak season (October-February). Carry the mood of the morning further with some guru gyan on fitness. Opt for a personal training session with a certified trainer at Leena Mogre’s Fitness Chandigarh (SCO 62-63, Sector 8-C, 0172-5076490) and work on remedies for that niggling back pain and neck strain. Also, get a workout routine/diet planned by a specialist. Spend time exploring malls in the city and catch a flick.
Get sporty, today! In the morning let cricketing lore keep you well-occupied. Acclaimed the world over for its structural design, the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) in Mohali has been the venue for many thrilling wins. Book a slot (0172-2232300) to take a tour of the stadium. By noon put on your golfing shoes and play a few holes at the verdant Chandigarh Golf Club (0172-2740350). The club has reciprocal membership with selected clubs. Golf sets are available on hire here. Post-lunch opt for a rejuvenating spa session at the upscale Headmasters (SCO 16-19, Sec 8-C, 09988880327).
Chandigarh is a gateway to the mountains. Take advantage of the proximity and let the day be a break away from the city grid as you head to the nearby mountains. Let the classic NH 22 (Shimla road) play host when you drive up the incline and halt at its all time favourite spots. See the Yadavindra Mughal Gardens (Pinjore); go for a cable-car ride (Parwanoo); visit Lawrence School(Sanawar), breathe the pure air at salubrious Kasauli; and stop for lunch at Baikunth Resorts (Garkhal) or select one of the dhabas—they’re almost restaurants now—at Dharampur. This town is almost the half-way mark to Shimla, and should the inclination be there you can drive further on to the Himachal capital (3.5 hrs from Chandigarh). Else, return to the city and spend a relaxed evening.
What’s a holiday without shopping! Spend the day browsing the brand-width of Sector 17, the heart of the city. Check for an art exhibition at the Fine Arts Museum (Punjab University) or Alliance Francaise (Sector 36). Watch a play at Tagore Theatre (Sector 18). Wrap up a fine holiday with dinner at a restaurant in Sector 26.
