在英语阅读教学中存在着这样的一种现象：在进行英语文章的讲解时，教师只是根据英语文章对文章中出现的单词、短语等进行详细的讲解，让学生根据课文进行英语单词的记忆，掌握固定短语的用法。同时，通过英语文章讲解相关语句中出现的语法知识。这样的课堂教学只是把英语学习中的一些基础知识放在了学习的首位，而忽视了英语阅读本身的作用。在这样的课堂教学，教师找不出教学的新意，教学方法单调，由于教师就不注重英语阅读的作用，学生不够体会到阅读的兴趣，对英语阅读也不会提起兴趣。
2.阅读教学中没有发挥出学生的主体地位
在传统的英语阅读教学中，教师对文章的中心意思、段落大意等进行一一的分析，学生只是跟着教师的思路去进行思考和记忆，没有形成自己的思维方式，这样势必会打消学生英语阅读学习的积极性，学生不会主动参与到英语课堂教学当中。
3.在英语阅读教学中教师忽视向学生传授阅读的方法和技巧
由于受到传统教学观念的影响，教师认为课堂教学就是要让学生掌握具体的知识，因此，在课堂教学过程当中，教师尽量把知识讲得详细，甚至对文章进行逐字逐句的翻译，唯恐有遗漏。但是，在课堂教学中教师却没有认识到向学生传授教学方法的意义。只有让学生掌握住阅读的正确方法，学生在阅读学习中才会看到成效，才会对阅读教学产生兴趣。
4.教师没有精选阅读材料
有些英语教师认为，在英语学习中学生应该多进行英语文章的阅读，于是给学生增加了阅读量。但是，在阅读材料的选择上教师却没有下功夫。教师只是随意的给学生一些英语文章进行阅读，没有考虑学生的英语水平和理解能力。当文章不适合学生的实际水平时，学生在阅读中就会受挫，对阅读的兴趣也会被削弱。
二、初中英语阅读教学的方法
1.提高英语阅读教学的质量，需要教师转变传统的教学理念
在传统的英语阅读教学过程中，教师一直处于课堂教学的主体地位之上，而忽视了学生的作用。在新的课程理念之下，教师要从传统的教学理念中转变过来，让学生成为课堂教学的主体，教师发挥好组织者、引导者的作用。在阅读教学中，教师没有必然为学生进行详细的讲解，教师要善于引导学生去分析文章，抓住文章的主题。教师要让学生通过自己的阅读，发现问题，并经过进一步的精读找出问题的答案。
2.教师要教给学生进行英语阅读的方法
俗话说“授人以鱼，不如授之以渔。”在进行阅读教学时，教师为学生进行文章的分析，不如教给学生阅读的方法，让学生能够通过自己的学习进行文章的分析。阅读的方法有很多，在不同的阅读要求下要选择不同的英语阅读方法。例如：跳读、精读、扫读等。跳读是为了获取一定的信息而运用的一种阅读方法，通过跳读学生可以很快的找出文章的中心句。精读是一种对文章进行细致阅读的教学方法，要求学生通过仔细阅读把握文章的每一个细节。扫读是通过对文章标题和首句以及尾句的阅读，把握文章整体结构的教学方法。教师要教给学生各种阅读的方法和技巧，让学生能够根据不同的要求合理选择不同的阅读方法。
3.教师要善于运用问题情境教学法引导学生进行阅读
英语阅读是一个学生和英语文章进行交互的过程。在英语阅读教学中运用问题情境教学法进行教学，可以让学生对英语文章中的重点内容进行注意，引发学生的思考，调动学生英语阅读课堂的参与性，同时检测学生英语阅读的效果，提高课堂教学的效率。在阅读教学过程中，教师可以为学生设置这样的问题：The main ides of the passsge is...＼According the text which of the following is ...等等。
