There also was a nun(修女) who wore a very simple and shy smile. Her greatest promise was only “By Saint Loy!” Called Madame Eglantine, this nun did extremely well in singing when church services were held, singing songs through her nose melodiously(悦耳的). And she could speak French quite fluently after studying at the school of Stratford. She had learnt all table manners because she would not let small pieces of food fall from her lips nor let her fingers get wet in the juice. She lifted her food so well that she would never get a single drop of food fall upon her breast. At politeness she really did her best. She wiped her upper lip so clean that not one bit of grease(油脂) was ever seen upon her drinking cup. She was careful and never reached for the meat in an improper way. And certainly she was a good company(同伴), so pleasant and so friendly. In her manner she would took pains to follow the ways of court and the dignity of state. And for this she was praised by all for her worthiness.
Now I shall tell you of her moral consciousness. Her charity was so great that to see a little mouse caught in a trap would be enough to make her cry, if dead or bleeding. She had some little dogs that she was feeding with roasted meat or milk and fine white bread. And she would weep if one were dead or if someone should beat it with a stick. Her heart was kind and her wimple(修女用的头巾) suited her status well. She had a well formed nose, a pair of eyes gray as glass and a little mouth that was soft and red. And it?蒺s for sure she had a fair forehead. It must have been a handbreadth(一手宽) wide for hardly was the lady undergrown. The beauty of her cloak(斗篷) I hadn?蒺t missed. She wore a rosary (念珠) around her wrist that was made out of coral(珊瑚) beads(珠子) all colored green and from it hung a pin of golden color. On the pin there was a letter“A” surrounded with flowers. She brought along another nun to be her priest.

II. Grammar and Sentences.
1. Called Madame Eglantine, this nun did extremely well in singing when church services were held, singing songs through her nose melodiously.
Praised by his English teacher, Chen Qi worked harder in English.
而“singing songs through her nose melodiously”是非谓语动词中的现在分词作状语,如:
Song Xiao went out of the classroom, singing Fairy Tale.
2. And she would weep if one were dead or if someone should beat it with a stick.
If I were you, I would read English every morning.
若是对过去事实相反情况的虚拟,则从句用过去完成时,主句用“主语+should/would/could/might+have done”。如:
If I had taken my mother?蒺s advice, I would not have made such a stupid mistake.
3. It must have been a handbreadth wide for hardly was the lady undergrown.
① must对过去情况的肯定推测;
must用于对过去的肯定推测时,用must+have done sth.
She must have read Chaucer?蒺s The Canterbury Tales for she could understand it very well.
蒺t have done sth.(过去不该做某事而做了);could have done sth.(过去可以做某事而没做);couldn?蒺t have done sth.(过去不可能做了某事);might have done sth.(过去本可以做某事而未做);ought to have done sth.(过去本应该做某事却未做);oughtn?蒺t to have done sth.(过去本不该做某事却做了)。
